Nikolai Sergejewitsch Schiljajew
Nikolai Sergeyevich Schiljajew ( Russian Николай Сергеевич Жиляев ; born October 6 . Jul / 18th October 1881 greg. In Kursk ; † 20th January 1938 in Moscow ) was a Russian composer, musicologist and educator.
Life
After private lessons with the composer Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev (1896-1900), Schiljajew completed studies at the Moscow Conservatory , including with Mikhail Mikhailovich Ippolitow-Ivanov . He then worked for a while as a composer; some of his works have been published by P. Jurgenson . He also performed as a pianist . He later worked as a music critic for various magazines. He was a friend of the composer and pianist Alexander Nikolaevich Scriabin , with whom he also worked. Shortly before the First World War, he began teaching. Alexei Wladimirowitsch Stantschinski , Samuil Evgenjewitsch Feinberg and Anatoli Nikolajewitsch Alexandrow were among his students from this period .
During the Russian Civil War he was war correspondent for the staff of Mikhail Nikolayevich Tukhachevsky . From 1922 he worked as an editor at the publishing house Gosizdat ( Госиздат ) where he edited an edition of Scriabin. In 1926–1930 and 1933–1937 he was a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. Due to his versatility and his charismatic personality, he had a decisive influence on the training of important Soviet conductors and composers: Kirill Petrovich Kondrashin , Aram Chatschaturjan and Lev Konstantinowitsch Knipper .
He was a victim of the Great Terror , convicted of alleged counterrevolutionary activities as a Tukhachevsky employee in 1937 and shot in the Moscow district of Kommunarka in 1938 . The Supreme Court of the USSR rehabilitated him in April 1961.
