Alemdar Sabitowytsch Karamanow ( Ukrainian Алемдар Сабітович Караманов , Russian Алемдар Сабитович Караманов , * 10. September 1934 in Simferopol , † in the night of 3. May 2007 ) was a Ukrainian-Russian composer .

life and work

Alemdar Karamanov's mother was a Russian singer. His father was of Turkish origin and soon after the birth of his son was exiled from the Crimea as part of Stalin's ethnic cleansing , from which he was never to return. Karamonov began to compose in childhood. From 1953 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Semjon Bogatyrjow and Vladimir Natanson . This was followed by postgraduate studies with Tichon Chrennikow and Dimitri Kabalewski . He had been friends with Alfred Schnittke , who held him in high regard, since he was a student . He completed his studies in 1963 and, after initial success as a composer, moved back to the Crimea in 1964, as his use of Western avant-garde techniques did not correspond to the ideas of Soviet cultural policy. In addition, from 1965 onwards he explicitly included Christian topics in his work. After decades of extensive isolation, it was not until 1990 that he was more noticeable in his home country and abroad. In 1995 Karamanov's works were heard in Berlin and London. He has now also received state awards, such as the title of People's Artist of Ukraine in 1994 .

Karamanov, who saw himself as a Crimean-Ukrainian-Russian composer, was first and foremost a symphonic composer: During his student days he wrote 10 symphonies, which were later to be followed by 15 more. The symphonies 11 to 14 form a cycle with the main title It is accomplished . The symphonies 18 to 23 on themes of the apocalypse, composed from 1976 to 1980, form a further cycle . Karamanow also created other orchestral works, including three piano concertos (the third, written in 1968 and revised in 1996, is entitled Ave Maria ), ballets, choral works, chamber and piano music, songs and film music. In 1992 he wrote the anthem of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea .
