Kaspi ( Georgian კასპი , kʼɑspʼɪ ) is a city in Georgia .
geography
It is located in the Inner Kartlien region and is the district town of the municipality of the same name . Kaspi is 48 km northwest of the capital Tbilisi on both sides of the Lechura River .
history
Archaeological excavations have shown that the urban area had been inhabited since the Stone Age. During the Bronze Age , Kaspi was an important place in what was then Georgia. As the Georgian historian Leonti Mroweli (9th century) wrote, the city of Kaspi was founded by the Georgian Uplos . In historical Georgian sources, Kaspi is mentioned alongside other ancient Georgian cities such as Sarkine, Urbnisi and Odsrche .
With the opening of the corresponding section of the Poti – Baku railway line , Kaspi received a train station in 1872 .
Kaspi received city status in 1959.
