Xavier-Marie Baronnet

Xavier-Marie Baronnet SJ (born April 5, 1927 in Chantenay-sur-Loire , Loire-Atlantique , France , † September 8, 2012 in Paris ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Port Victoria in the Seychelles .

Life

Xavier-Marie Baronnet, who was baptized on May 1, 1927, grew up in Pontivy in the Morbihan department in Brittany . After his military service he joined the religious order of the Jesuits in Laval on October 16, 1950 , where he completed his novitiate from 1950 to 1952 and received the spiritual training of the Jesuits. From 1953 to 1956 he studied philosophy in Chantilly , and did a teaching internship at the Ecole Ste Geneviève . After studying Catholic theology from 1957 to 1961, he received the sacrament of ordination on September 7, 1960 .

He studied African sociology at the Sorbonne in Paris and in 1962 took part in the establishment and activities of INADES (Institut Africain pour le Développement Economique et Social), a non-profit organization for development projects in Africa based in Ivory Coast . After further extensive Jesuit training, he left Africa in 1966 and went to French Polynesia , where he supported the work of the Archbishops of Tahiti ( Paul-Laurent-Jean-Louis Mazé SS.CC and from 1973 Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath ). From 1976 Baronnet was active in Réunion . In 1980 he was involved in the founding of CEDOI (Conference Episcopale d'Océan India) in Réunion.

In 1987 he was appointed general almsman of the Scouts de France , where he trained executives and pastors. From 1993 to 1993 he was secretary of the Catholic Conference of the islands of Mauritius , Réunion and Seychelles . In 1994 he was appointed Superior of the Jesuits who worked in the Indian Ocean area.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Port Victoria on March 3, 1995 . The episcopal ordination gives him the bishop of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion , Gilbert Guillaume Marie-Jean Aubry , on 25 June 1995; Co- consecrators were Maurice Piat CSSp , Bishop of Port-Louis , and Jean-Samuel Raobelina MS , Bishop of Tsiroanomandidy .

On May 14, 2001, Denis Wiehe CSSp was assigned to him as coadjutor for his diverse service . After John Paul II had accepted his resignation on June 1, 2002 for reasons of age, Baronnet returned to his French homeland and spent his retirement in Paris .

Act

Xavier-Marie Baronnet initiated the renovation of the Cathedral de l'Immaculée Conception , later also the Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette (Cap Ternay Chapel), the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny in Roche Caïman ( Sœurs de Saint-Joseph de Cluny ), the Church of St. Joseph on Praslin and others. During his episcopate, several new groups, movements and services were developed such as PODAS (Parents of disabled Persons Association) , an association of parents of disabled people, and the Association des parents des enfants handicapés , an association of parents of disabled children. He also initiated the family promotion associations, APSHF (Association for the Promotion of Solid Humane Families) and Association pour la promotion des familles humaines et solides as well as an association for Christian seafarers in the Seychelles, Le Syndicat Chrétien des Pêcheurs Seychellois .

Bishop Baronnet engaged in training and commissioned the translation of the New Testament into Creole . He negotiated an agreement with the Seychelles National Ministry of Education to locate Catholic schools for a period of 99 years for a symbolic amount of one rupee (Rs. 1.00) per year.

Baronnet founded the La Mission Catholique Romaine aux Seychelles , from which the L'Eglise Catholique Romaine aux Seychelles (The Roman Catholic Church in the Seychelles) emerged.

In 1998 he supported the merger of the two religious congregations, Congrégation des sœurs de Sainte Elizabeth and the Sœurs des Filles de Marie .

For his work he was made Knight of the Legion of Honor by President Jacques Chirac on February 18, 1998 and an officer of the Legion of Honor by François Hollande on July 13, 2012.
