Otschamtschire ( Georgian ოჩამჩირე , Abkhazian Очамчыра / Otschamtschyra , Russian Очамчира / Otschamtschira ) is a city in the disputed region of Abkhazia .

geography

Ochamtschire is the capital of the municipality named after him and is located on the Black Sea , about 50 km southeast of the Abkhazian capital Sukhumi . The city center is about five meters above sea level.

history

Well in Ochamtschire

Otschamtschire was founded around the 5th century BC. Chr. Of Greek established settlers. In the city there was a prisoner of war camp 146 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War . In 1989 Otschamtschire had about 20,400 inhabitants. In 2003 there were only 4,700. A large part of the population fled the city during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict in the early 1990s. Many refugees, especially from the Georgian ethnic group , have not returned or could not return to this day. In many quarters of the city the abandoned and derelict houses of the refugees dominate the streetscape.

Since 2009 there has been a base of the Russian coast guard in Ochamtschira.

Economy and Transport

The economy in Ochamtschire is no longer as industrial as it was during the Soviet Union. The armed conflicts that followed their disintegration severely damaged the industrial facilities. Reconstruction has only taken place sporadically due to the lack of funds and the collapse of the old markets. The old industrial plants are now mostly looted ruins.

The traditionally strong agriculture of the region around Ochamtschire, now the most important branch of business after the decline of industry, is dedicated to the cultivation of tea. Therefore, the largest tea packaging factory in Abkhazia is located there.

Tourism, once a not inconsiderable source of income in the city, is only picking up again very gradually. The once quite developed tourist infrastructure has largely deteriorated and is being maintained at a modest level with great difficulty due to the limited public funds available.

Otschamtschire is on the main line of the Abkhazian Railway , whose operation beyond Sukhumi is currently suspended. The railway systems have fallen into disrepair, some have been dismantled. A branch line leads to the capital of the neighboring Tkwarcheli Rajon . Their condition is also catastrophic.

The city is located on the Georgian national road S1 or the Russian trunk road M27 , which leads from the border with Russia via Sukhumi to Tbilisi . The construction of a bypass keeps the already modest through traffic out of the city with an extremely dilapidated road network. Otschamtschire is connected to the national bus and minibus network via this trunk road.
