Tqwartscheli ( Georgian ტყვარჩელი , Abkhazian Тҟәарчал / Tquartschal ; Russian Ткварчели ) is a city in Georgia and Abkhazia .
history
Tqwartscheli received town charter in 1942. During the Second World War , the coal mining operated here since 1935 gained in importance, especially since the most important coal mining areas of the former Soviet Union in the Donbass area were temporarily in German hands.
During the military conflict between Abkhazian and Georgian troops in 1992 and 1993, the city was besieged by the Georgians, but was able to withstand the troops thanks to military and humanitarian support from Russia . Tqwartscheli has been the capital of the newly formed raion of the same name since 1995 .
population
In 1989 there were still 22,000 people living in Tqwartscheli. About 40% of the population belonged to the Abkhaz ethnic group , a quarter were Russians and a quarter Georgians . Due to the military conflict at the beginning of the 1990s, the population decreased drastically. As in other regions of Abkhazia, most Georgians fled to the Georgian territories under the control of the government in Tbilisi . The decline in coal mining associated with the conflict led to the departure of more residents.
economy
Coal mining has been the city's most important industry for decades. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union , the shafts were closed. Today the Abkhaz- Turkish company Tamsaş operates the aboveground mining of coal. Tamsaş contributes 75% of the city's municipal tax revenue.
The construction of a cement factory is planned, the production of which will be used for the construction of the sports facilities for the 2014 Winter Olympics in nearby Sochi .
traffic
Tqwartscheli lies on the branch line Otschamtschire - Tqwartscheli of the main line of the Abkhazian railway that runs along the Black Sea coast . Rail traffic on this route is currently suspended.
Approximately parallel to the railway line runs a road tkvarcheli with the city ochamchira on National Road 1 S Sochumi -Tiflis connects.
