List of major roads in Oman
History of the road network
Until 1970 there were 6 kilometers of asphalt road in Oman , namely in the capital Muscat around the palace of Sultan Said ibn Taimur . The totalitarian ruler invested nothing in the infrastructure of the then very backward country. An old pass road existed from his property over the nearby mountains near Amerat . Otherwise cities and villages could only be reached by off-road vehicle or camel . Desert slopes connected the places with each other at that time, but longer journeys with the off-road vehicle were difficult to implement because there was no petrol station network. When Sultan Qaboos ibn Said changed power in 1970, the first plans for a road network were made. The main challenge was to build roads in the mountainous north. Large amounts of stone had to be removed and blown up here. The Austrian construction company Strabag secured the tender for the construction of the first asphalt road network . The cities in the north along the al-Batina plain were to be connected to one another. Just like the villages south of the Hajjar Mountains and the oil fields near the Saudi-Arabian border around the Umm as-Samin salt pan . Roads were also built around Salala , the capital of the Dhofar region , in the crisis-ridden south of the country . The road network should include the following routes.
- Muscat - as-Sib (30 km)
- as-Sib - Sohar - Khatmat (300 km)
- Sohar - Buraimi and Al Ain (120 km)
- as-Sib - Nizwa (150 km)
- Nizwa - Fahud, Jibal and Natih oil fields
- Nizwa - Ibri (133 km)
- Salalah - Thumrait (21 km)
After completing these major projects, the road network continued to improve. The first highway was Route 1 , the Batinah Costal Highway, which connected the United Arab Emirates and the Omani capital of Muscat .
Road network
In total there are around 60,000 kilometers of roads in Oman . About 30,000 kilometers of it are paved roads. There are 2,000 kilometers of motorway in Oman, most of them in the north of the country.
Road projects
As of November 2015, there are many road construction projects in Oman. The most important construction projects are:

- Sumail - Bidbid - Sur , three lane highway
- Nizwa - Thumrait - Adam - Salala , highway with two lanes, several construction phases
- Ibri - Saudi Arabia , highway through the Rub-al-Chali desert

numbering
All major streets in Oman are numbered: from 1 to 51 with a few exceptions. New roads are not included in this list. The numbers are rarely found on signposts. The letter R stands for route.
Signage
In Oman , the background of the signpost is blue. The lettering is bilingual, in English at the bottom and in Arabic at the top . Special road signs such as camels crossing or sand dunes are normal for the region.
Speed limits
Basically, you are allowed to drive 100 km / h on motorways and expressways in Oman . On Route 1 and Route 15 , the maximum is 120 km / h. The speed limit on normal highways is 80 km / h. On main roads and secondary roads, the speed limit varies between 40 km / h and 80 km / h.
