Suhar ( Arabic صحار, DMG Ṣuḥār ) or Sohar is a city in northeastern Oman on the Gulf of Oman , 230 km northwest of the capital Muscat . It is the most important city on the coastal plain and the capital of Wilaya Suhar . Suhar is also the capital of Shamal al-Batina Governorate , and was the capital of al-Batina Governorate, which existed until 2011 . Suhar is the fifth largest city in Oman with 130,000 inhabitants.

history

The city was of great importance in the history of Oman as a center of sea trade . Already in the 3rd millennium BC BC copper and diorite seem to have been shipped from Magan (former name) to India and Mesopotamia .

After the city was developed into a trading center under the Persian Sassanids , it rose to become one of the most important trading centers in the Islamic world under Muslim rule. In the 9th century, sea trade reached via India to China and East Africa . The extensive trade connections are also evident in the stories of Sindbad , which is said to have come from Suhar. The Persian Buyids destroyed Suhar in 965, probably to eliminate competition for Basra . In the period that followed, the Seljuks and Persians of Hormuz came to rule .

After Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India in 1498 , Portugal rose to become the leading trading and sea power of the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1507 Suhar came under the rule of the Portuguese . After the Portuguese were driven out by Nasir ibn Murschid in 1649 , the city could no longer build on its great past as a trading center. One reason was probably the silting up of the lagoons , which had previously served as ports.

seaport

A little north of the city, the new "Port of Sohar", about 20 km² in size, was built - as a 50/50 joint venture with the port of Rotterdam - and opened in 2004. In addition to the actual harbor, there are also extensive industrial plants on the site, including a. a refinery, several power plants (including the Sohar Aluminum power plant ) and a methane plant . The aluminum smelter of Sohar Aluminum is a few kilometers inland.
