The Sohar Airport is a commercial airport near the city of Sohar in the region Schamal al-Batina in the Sultanate of Oman . The airport is operated by the Omani airport operator Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) .

history

The airport tender included the construction of an international airport including a runway system, buildings and infrastructure. The order was divided into 4 sections, each of which will be tendered individually. In 2013, parts 1 and 2 of the order were awarded or already completed. Completion was scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013. The total value of the contract was $ 300 million.

In the finished state, the airport should have a 4000 meter long runway, a terminal for 500,000 passengers per year and 50,000 tons of freight per year, taxiways, a fire station, water and electricity supply, runway lighting and access roads.

In January 2016, Package 3 (Terminal and Airside Infrastructure) was awarded to L&T. The planned construction time for the final section was 24 months and was completed on time in 2018.

In 2014, Oman Air announced that it would not offer flights from Muscat to Sohar. Thus the only connection was lost and the airport stood still for three years. International flights from Sohar to Sharjah have been operating since June 2017 . Air Arabia was the first official connection at the airport.

Destinations

The airport is currently served four times a day by the low-cost airline Air Arabia from its Sharjah hub . Qatar Airways serves the Qatari capital Doha daily. From July 2019, the Omani low-cost carrier Salam Air will also be flying to the coastal city from Salala .
