The University of Suhar ( Arabic جامعة صحار, DMG Ǧāmiʿat Ṣuḥār ; English Sohar University ) is a private university in Suhar in the north of the Sultanate of Oman .

history

The previous institution of Suhar University was the Sohar College for Applied Sciences , founded in 1998 . At the time, the foreign academic partner was the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside , now the University of Lincoln .

Sultan Qaboos issued royal decree 41/99 in 1999, which allowed the establishment of private universities in Oman. The government is supporting the establishment with a number of measures: Tax exemption for five years; Free building land, capital grants of up to 50% of the equity (maximum 3 million Omani rials ; at that time about 6 million €) and state scholarships for students from low-income families. The government tries to ensure the quality of teaching through the mandatory cooperation with a recognized foreign university and the mandatory accreditation with the Oman Accreditation Council (OAC).

As a result, the university was founded on September 11, 2001 by a ministerial decree as the first private university in the country. Today the university is a branch of the University of Queensland , with which there is also an academic partnership to ensure quality standards.

Academic structure

The university has four faculties: engineering, applied sciences, business administration and social sciences. The following programs can be completed at it: a university preparatory course (Foundation program), the " Bachelor ", the "Diploma" and the "Advanced Diploma".
