Rustaq ( Arabic الرستاق, DMG ar-Rustāq ) is a historic city in Oman on the northern edge of the Hajar Mountains with good connections to the fertile coastal plain of al-Batina .

Rustaq (Persian for border area ) was under the control of the Persians in the 7th century. In 1624 the first ruler of the Yaruba dynasty Nasir ibn Murschid moved his seat to Rustaq. The fortress of Qalaat al-Qesra was built during this time. In 1784 Hamad ibn Said moved the seat of government to Muscat . The city, like other inner-Romanesque places, remained independent until the 1950s. Rustaq is the capital of Wilaya Rustaq and the capital of the Janub al-Batina Governorate .
