Robert of Chester
Robert von Chester ( Latinized : Robertus Castrensis) was an English Arabist and mathematician who worked in Spain ( Segovia ) in the 1140s and then returned to England.
He translated mathematical texts of the Arabs into Latin, including the algebra of al-Khwarizmi (1145) and various commentaries on Euclid. He also wrote texts on alchemy , one of which was a translation of a compendium from Byzantium.
Sometimes he was and is identified with Robert von Ketton (Robertus Kettenensis), another English translator from Arabic, but who worked in the Kingdom of Navarre.
