Umm as-Samim ( Arabic أم الصّميم, DMG Umm aṣ-Ṣamīm ; also Umm Al Samim , Umm As Samin and similar) is a sabcha (shallow, occasionally flooded basin) on the Arabian Peninsula , which is known for its quicksand . It is located on the eastern edge of the Rub al-Chali desert and roughly forms the border between Oman and Saudi Arabia .

In the Pliocene and Ice Age, there was a large lake in its place. It was Sir Wilfred Thesiger who was the first European to visit and report on this area in the 1940s.
