The Al-Sharqiyah Expressway is a highway in the Sultanate of Oman . The trunk road relieves the trunk road Route 23 , which meanders through the eastern Hajjar Mountains . The travel time between the cities in the north and east of Oman has been significantly reduced thanks to this transport project. The highway begins in Bidbid on Route 15 and runs through the eastern foothills of the Hajjar Mountains through the municipal capital Ibra to Al Kamil on the edge of the Wahiba Desert . An extension of the road to Sur on the Gulf of Oman is under construction.
The motorway was opened to traffic on January 20, 2020. In a three-monthly test phase, initially only vehicles under 3.5 tons were allowed to drive on the motorway. The first and only tunnels in Oman are also on the route. Two tunnels with a length of 650 meters and 1350 meters were built under the most modern safety standards. The motorway has been expanded to three lanes in both directions. Over 90% of the route is equipped with an LTE connection. The speed limit is 120 km / h. Only 90 km / h applies in the two tunnels.
