In his publications, Gunter Haug initially dealt with local history topics of the Swabian region until he made his debut as a crime novel writer with Tiefenrausch in 1998 . In his novels, which appeared under the heading “Swabian crime thrillers”, Haug initially combined scenes from southern Germany with topics from diving before shifting the focus to mostly current events from politics and business.

His book This One Life , which appeared in September 2006 and deals with a true story (the life and the violent end of August Voll, the grandfather of Haug's wife) between 1933 and 1945, made headlines nationwide because it contained the real names of victims and perpetrators in the Nazi era are given. In March 2015 the book was published by Landhege-Verlag as a paperback in its 4th edition (with a new afterword).
