Life

At work on an iron sculpture

From 1952 to 1955 Otto learned Potsch the profession as a turner at the Vienna ivory sculptor and haberdashery -Drechsler Josef carrier. There he learned how to work ivory , horn , tortoiseshell and amber . During the third year of his apprenticeship, Potsch attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as a guest student .

In 1957, Potsch was commissioned by his later father-in-law Josef Piringer to make sculptures from the serpentine found there for his serpentine grinding shop in Bernstein, Burgenland . Potsch discovered his preference for animal sculptures.

In 1960 Potsch passed the master craftsman's examination for the wood turner trade and began earning a living for his family in his home town of Wolkersdorf. He received a commissioned work from a Viennese pipe factory for the production of 5,000 calabash pipes, ultimately over 80,000 pieces in the following years.

In 1966 he founded his first art workshop in Wolkersdorf. Another art workshop with an associated shop was built in Bernstein in 1967. Numerous sculptures are made from noble serpentine.

The idea of building a museum as a total work of art matured in Potsch. After four years of construction, Potsch created the rock museum in Bernstein, Burgenland, in 1981 . The construction was carried out exclusively with own funds.

Otto Potsch also dealt with painting. In 1983 and 1984 study trips followed with Heinrich C. Berann to Corfu, Provence and Tuscany.

On his own initiative, the former stables in Wolkersdorf Castle were converted into his castle gallery in 1986, where the artist still works today.
