Salvo , actually Salvatore Mangione (born May 22, 1947 in Leonforte in Sicily , Italy ; † September 12, 2015 in Turin ) was an Italian painter , photographer and conceptual artist and representative of the Italian Arte Povera .

life and work

Salvatore Mangione was born in Sicily in 1947, but moved to Turin in 1956, where he lived until his death. Salvo started painting in the early 1960s.

In 1970 he had his first solo exhibition in the Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone in Turin: the works he exhibited were photomontages , with images from newspapers and notes as transcriptions of childlike handwriting and texts from literary history.

At the same time, from 1970 to 1972, he began to create a series of marble tablets that only ever contained single words or phrases such as: "Idiot" , "I am the best" or "Unless you are alive" or with parts of old texts that were inscribed with names or lists of artists and famous personalities of the past like a signature. Salvo's works were ironic and provocative and concerned themselves with reflecting on the meaning of the works of art, language and visual perception prior to the statement that art always has a relationship to the past.

In 1972 he was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies department with some works .

In 1973, with a few exceptions, there was a “return” to traditional painting on canvas with a brush. His painting stylized, he used modern, lively colors and stereotypical symbols. Typical for his pictures are deserted landscapes and architectures that are flooded with a strange, powerful light.

In 1975 he began working with a mixture of conceptual art and painting; he depicted the names of artists and writers of the past and combined them with colorful embroidery against a background in abstract shapes that was symbolic of the region or state from which the artist came. In the following years he took his themes from mythology and archeology: ruins as signs of the past, past civilizations and landscapes. These topics occupied him to the last.
