Pedro Ignacio Calderón (* 1933 in Paraná ) is an Argentine conductor .

Life

Calderón was a student of Vicente Scaramuzza , Alberto Ginastera and Hermann Scherchen . In 1953 he made his debut as conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Radio Nacional in Buenos Aires . In 1958 he became director of the Tucumán Orchestra . In 1960 he went to Rome , where he studied at the Academia de Santa Cecilia with Fernando Previtali . From 1966 to 1991 he was director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires, with which he performed all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies in the 1970s . He has also made guest appearances as a conductor of numerous other Latin American and European symphony orchestras and conducted the works of Verdi , Puccini , Rossini , Wagner , Rimski-Korsakow and de Falla at the Teatro Colón and other opera houses . In 1996 and 1998 he was named the best conductor of the season by the Argentine Music Critics Association, and the following year the Fundación Conex named him one of the five best conductors of the decade.
