Bruno N'Gotty (born June 10, 1971 in Lyon ) is a former French football player with Cameroonian roots. The defender , who played six international matches for the French national football team between 1994 and 1997 , won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Paris Saint-Germain .

Career

Career start in France

N'Gotty started playing soccer in his hometown at Olympique Lyon . As a young player, he made his debut in early 1988 on the occasion of a cup game in the club's first team. Then he sat in the squad of the then second division and was an integral part of the team that managed the return of the clubs to Division 1 in the summer of 1989. In the first division he established himself as a regular player and was given the name Koeman noir due to his playing style comparable to Ronald Koeman .

At the side of players like Eugène Kabongo , Rémi Garde , Samassi Abou and Florian Maurice, N'Gotty helped the club to stay in the French elite series at the beginning of the decade. In the course of the 1993/94 season, which he completed with Olympique Lyon in eighth place in the table, he caught the attention of the French national coach Aimé Jacquet . At the side of Zinédine Zidane and Lilian Thuram , he made his international debut on August 17, 1994 on the occasion of an international match against the Czech national team . However, he could not fix himself in the selection, although he had a small success at club level in the following year with the runner-up behind FC Nantes . At the side of Éric Roy , Pascal Olmeta and Franck Gava , he was one of the best defenders in the league in 35 of the 38 season games and had scored three goals.

N'Gotty left his hometown club to join the 1994 champions and reigning cup winners, the capital city club Paris Saint-Germain. The wish to increase the chances of winning titles by changing clubs was fulfilled in his first year. At the side of Julio César Dely Valdés , Bernard Lama , Youri Djorkaeff , Raí and Patrice Loko , he moved into the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup 1995/96 against SK Rapid Wien . In the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels , he became the match winner on May 8, 1996, when he overcame Austrian goalkeeper Michael Konsel with a long-range shot in the 28th minute to make the game-winning goal to 1-0. As runner-up behind AJ Auxerre , he narrowly missed a second title win with the club.

The following season was almost a reflection of N'Gotty's first season in Paris. He also reached the final with the team in the 1996/97 European Cup Winners' Cup . The defense of the title at Rotterdam's De Kuip failed, as FC Barcelona , managed by Bobby Robson , prevailed with a goal from Ronaldo with a 1-0 victory. In addition, the championship was again failed, but as runner-up behind AS Monaco he moved into the UEFA Champions League with the club .

However, N'Gotty had once again played his way into Aimé Jacquet's notebook and appeared again in 1997 for the Équipe Tricolore . Although he could not play again permanently, the season 1997/98 brought him several title wins at club level. After giving up all hopes early on in the championship, which ended eighth in the table, he celebrated two cup triumphs with the club. In April, the team won the Coupe de la Ligue title without his help on penalties against Girondins Bordeaux , and he also moved into the final against RC Lens for the Coupe de France 1997/98 . There he was also without a game in early May when the team celebrated a 2-1 success with goals from Raí and Marco Simone .

Italy and return to France

N'Gotty, who had not been included in the squad of the French national team for the 1998 World Cup , left his home country in the summer of that year and moved to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan . At the side of Paolo Maldini , Alessandro Costacurta and Thomas Helveg , he was only part of the regular members of the Lombard club. Nevertheless, he contributed to winning the national championship title in 25 season appearances. After he did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player at the beginning of the following season due to injury, the club awarded him to league rivals SSC Venice . At his new club he was one of the regulars, but could not prevent the club's descent from the lagoon city to the second division at the end of the season.

After two years in Italy, N'Gotty returned to France in the summer of 2000. At Olympique Marseille , he became a regular in the defense line. With the team around players like Ibrahima Bakayoko , Frédéric Brando , Jacques Abardonado and Patrick Blondeau , he barely escaped relegation at the end of the season when the last non-relegation place was occupied before FC Toulouse , Racing Strasbourg and AS Saint-Étienne . After only one season he left France again.

Years in England

In the summer of 2001, N'Gotty was hired by the Bolton Wanderers . Initially committed as a loan player, the club bought him due to his performance in January 2002. With the team around Kevin Nolan , Fredi Bobič , Youri Djorkaeff and Michael Ricketts , he reached relegation in the Premier League in his first year in England with 16th place in the table . As a regular player, he was also the driving force that kept the club in the English House of Lords in the following years. After coach Sam Allardyce wanted to lower the average age of the team in the middle of the decade, his contract with the club, which expired in the summer of 2006, was not extended.

N'Gotty therefore moved to Birmingham City on a free transfer . For last year's relegated team he ran in the second-rate championship . After missing the promotion he moved to the end of the season to league rivals Leicester City . From there he was loaned to third division Hereford United in September 2008 , for which he played a month in Football League One . He then returned to Leicester City, where his contract expired in the summer of 2009. He then ended his active career.
