Samassi Abou (born April 4, 1973 in Gagnoa , Ivory Coast ) is a former French-Ivorian football player .

The Ivory Coast-born striker began his professional career with French second division club FC Martigues . After only one season he moved to Division 1 at Olympique Lyon . There he played mostly in the regular team for the first two years, but appearances became increasingly rare because of his poor scoring. In 1996 he left Lyon and moved to AS Cannes , where he made 37 appearances and scored 5 goals. At the end of October 1997, manager Harry Redknapp brought Abou to West Ham United in the Premier League for a transfer fee of £ 400,000 .

There, the former U21 national player of France quickly achieved cult status with the fans because of his hairstyle and his technically adept style of play. But as before at Lyon, his stakes became less and less due to his low goal yield and the relationship with manager Redknapp cooled significantly. When Abou turned down two transfer requests from Bradford City and the Heart of Midlothian , who were both willing to pay £ 800,000 for the player, West Ham no longer considered him. He was loaned to Ipswich Town for a month in December 1998, and to Walsall FC in October 1999 , who sent the striker back to West Ham after just two unsuccessful months. After two further loan deals, to the French club ES Troyes AC and FC Kilmarnock to Scotland, his contract was terminated in the summer of 2000.

Abou then returned to France, where he received a contract with the Corsican club AC Ajaccio . In 2002 he was with Ajaccio champions in Ligue 2, but played no role in the planning for the first division and was no longer committed. He played his last professional season in 2002/03 at FC Lorient .
