Rifle throwing game

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a rifle throwing game (Italian: "La Partita della Lattina"), the first knockout round of the first leg between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Inter Milan , held on October 20, 1971 in the European Cup , went down in football history. Borussia won the first leg at home in the Bökelberg Stadium 7-1; the game was later canceled by UEFA as Italian striker Roberto Boninsegna was  hit by a lemonade can - thrown by a spectator - in the 28th minute , fell to the ground and was then substituted.

The legendary status of this game is also due to the fact that it was not broadcast on German television due to contractual problems between ARD and the manager of Borussia, Helmut Grashoff , and therefore - apart from short film clips - only radio, newspaper and eyewitness reports gives. At the time it was about the question of who had to pay the transfer costs of 60,000 DM and the 11 percent VAT due at the time.

The UEFA Disciplinary Committee then ordered a suspension for Borussia's next three home games in European competition and a fine of CHF 10,000 . After a 2: 4 in the second leg in Milan and a 0: 0 in the replay on December 1, 1971 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium , Borussia Mönchengladbach was eliminated from the competition.

Luggi Müller later said:

“I saw the can hit Boninsegna on the shoulder. At first he just looked puzzled. Then Inter captain Sandro Mazzola rushed up to him and called out to let himself fall. And then he sank to the ground as if struck by lightning. The can was as good as empty. I noticed that when I kicked her towards the gang. Boninsegna wanted to get up, but an inter-masseur kept pushing him to the ground. Then he was carried away on a stretcher. But we saw that he was winking at his teammates. It was a great acting performance. "

- Luggi Müller , eyewitness report

Roberto Boninsegna has always denied that a production took place:

“I don't know what happened next because I was on the floor. I was on my way to throw a throw-in when I was hit and passed out. After I came to, I wanted to continue playing, but the doctor took me to the locker room. "

According to the Italian newspaper "La Stampa", the doctor who examined Boninsegna found that the striker suffered a severe parietal contusion from throwing the can.

The tin can was in the club museum in Vitesse Arnhem until June 2012 , after the match referee Jef Dorpmans took it to Arnhem . In autumn 2011 Borussia Mönchengladbach tried to acquire the rifle on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the rifle throw. In June 2012 the rifle was handed over to the club management of Borussia Mönchengladbach in a festive setting. It has been exhibited in the club's own museum, the Fohlenwelt , since it opened on May 3, 2019 .
