Teammates separated the brawlers and coach José Antonio Camacho replaced both shortly afterwards. The club finally decided to suspend both players. Soon after, Katsouranis and Luisão apologized for the derailment.

On August 11, 2012, the Benfica captain struck down referee Christian Fischer in the 43rd minute during his team's test match against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Düsseldorf ESPRIT arena .
