Jörg Schmadtke (born March 16, 1964 in Dusseldorf - Eller ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper and coach and today's functionary . He has been Managing Director Sport at VfL Wolfsburg since June 1, 2018 .
Career
player
After graduating from high school, Schmadtke began studying mechanical engineering and later business administration , which he also broke off. As a goalkeeper Schmadtke was first used on September 28, 1985 for Fortuna Düsseldorf - for which he had already played as a youth - in the Bundesliga (4-0 against FC Bayern Munich ). From then on he was the goalkeeper of Fortuna. In 1986/87 he was only able to play 13 games due to an injury. During the 1991/92 season he was temporarily suspended by the then trainer Rolf Schafstall . During the winter break he was taken back to the team by Schafstall. After Schafstall was released a short time later, he was back in goal for the second half of the season. In 1993 Schmadtke left the club and then played for SC Freiburg (until 1997) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1997/98). He played 266 games in the Bundesliga and saw nine yellow and one red card . In the 2nd Bundesliga he was used in 109 games (two yellow cards). On September 6, 1998 he jumped in as a goalkeeper for Borussia Mönchengladbach for a few weeks , but stayed there without a Bundesliga appearance.
Trainer
On November 10, 1998, he became assistant coach at Rainer Bonhof's side in Mönchengladbach . Schmadtke was released on August 31, 1999, shortly after Bonhof asked to terminate his contract. For a short time, Schmadtke also worked for a US sports facility construction company. In January 2001 he became goalkeeping coach at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
official
Alemannia Aachen
From December 1, 2001, Schmadtke was officially the sports director at Alemannia Aachen GmbH, which is in debt with around 4 million euros . Alemannia reached the DFB Cup final in 2004 with a small budget and played successfully in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup . The club made a profit of four million euros and was debt-free for the first time in its history. In 2006 they managed to return to the Bundesliga , from which Aachen, however, relegated again after one season . As early as April 2006, when the ascent was practically certain, the euphoria in the city was immense and the decision to build a new stadium was pending, Schmadtke urged a little more planning preview. After head coach Guido Buchwald was fired in November 2007, Schmadtke was in charge of training for the Alemannia second division team on an interim basis until the winter break. In October 2008 he reached an agreement with Alemannia that his contract, which ended in June 2009, would not be extended. Schmadtke made this public in a television interview on October 20, 2008 before a home game; those responsible on the supervisory board wanted to postpone the announcement to October 22nd. Since Schmadtke's approach was not discussed with the association, Alemannia Aachen GmbH put him on leave on the same evening with immediate effect.
Hannover 96
From July 2009 to June 2013 Schmadtke was the sports director of Hannover 96 . On March 18, 2011, his fixed-term contract was converted into an open-ended one, and he was now Managing Director of Sport . In April 2012, Schmadtke asked the club for family reasons to terminate the contract at the end of the season; Finally, he agreed an eleven week break until September 10th and then part-time work until the end of 2012. In April 2013 Schmadtke asked to terminate the employment relationship.
1. FC Cologne
For the 2013/14 season he took over the post of Managing Director Sport at 1. FC Köln . Schmadtke signed a contract until summer 2017; on the last day of the 2014/15 season (23 May 2015) it was extended to 30 June 2020. On May 11, 2017, the association announced the extension of the contract with Schmadtke until 2023. In the 2016/17 season 1. FC Köln qualified for the UEFA Europa League , making the club play internationally for the first time in 25 years. In June 2017, the jury of 11 Freunde magazine named Schmadtke the best manager of the 2016/17 Bundesliga season. Before the 2017/18 season , striker Anthony Modeste was transferred to Tianjin Quanjian for around 35 million euros , which was the most expensive transfer in the club's history to date. After 1. FC Köln had been in last place in the table with two points after the 9th matchday, the club and Schmadtke terminated the contract, which would run until 2023, in October 2017.
VfL Wolfsburg
On June 1, 2018, Schmadtke took over the position of Managing Director Sport at VfL Wolfsburg .
