Beginnings in France

Modeste during his time at Girondins Bordeaux (2010)

Modeste played in his youth at the amateur club Étoile Sportive Fréjusienne and after three years moved to OGC Nice . There he completed several games for the second team, for which he scored his first goals. In 2007 the striker made the leap into the first team. He played a total of 42 games for Nice in Ligue 1 , scoring three goals. For the 2009/10 season Modeste was loaned to Ligue 2 to SCO Angers . There he convinced as a leading player and came on 19 league goals, with which he was the second top scorer in Ligue 2.

In the summer of 2010, Modeste was signed by Girondins Bordeaux with their new coach Jean Tigana . He signed a four-year deal and would follow in the footsteps of Marouane Chamakh , who had migrated to Arsenal . After initial problems, Modeste equalized against champions Olympique Marseille in the 88th minute on matchday four , made 37 appearances and ten goals that season, three of them in a 4-2 win in the away game against newcomer AC, who was quite overwhelmed in the league Arles-Avignon . At the end of the season he finished seventh with Bordeaux, which narrowly missed qualification for an international competition. In the following season he came to the end of the year on 15 league appearances and three goals, before he was loaned for the second half of the season to England for relegation-threatened Premier League club Blackburn Rovers . He only made nine league appearances there - mostly as a substitute - and did not score a goal. After relegation he returned to France, the next station was SC Bastia in Corsica , just returned to Ligue 1. With 15 goals Modeste contributed significantly to staying in the league and 12th place.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

In the summer of 2013, the committed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which in the pre-season had avoided relegation on the threat of relegation to the second Bundesliga, Modeste; he received a three-year contract. The striker was never able to develop into a regular player and was always overshadowed by the more dangerous attackers Volland and Firmino . In his second and last season for the Kraichgauer, Modeste just missed reaching an international starting place with the team as eighth in the table. The Frenchman's engagement in Sinsheim ended in the summer of 2015.

1. FC Cologne

For the season 2015/16 engaged him 1. FC Köln , with whom he signed a up to 30 June 2019 valid contract. In his first competitive game for Cologne, the 4-0 victory in the DFB-Pokal game against SV Meppen on August 8, 2015, he scored the first three goals. In his Bundesliga debut for FC on August 16, 2015 (1st matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against VfB Stuttgart , he scored his first league goal in the Cologne jersey with a penalty in the 75th minute to make it 1-0. At the end of the season Modeste had 15 hits on the account. On the 20th matchday of the season he scored his 50th Bundesliga goal in the 2-1 defeat against SC Freiburg with the goal to make it 1-1. In 2016/17 he scored 25 league goals as the third top scorer of the season.

His greatest success with the Rhinelander had also been the highlight of the last few years. For the 2017/18 season they qualified for the group stage of the Europa League by surprisingly fifth in the 2016/17 Bundesliga season . Modeste, the undisputed regular player in both seasons, quickly developed into a cult player.

Tianjin Quanjian

After it had been uncertain for weeks whether Modeste would stay at 1. FC Köln or leave the club, the striker switched to Chinese first division team Tianjin Quanjian on July 12, 2017 , for whom he won a 2-0 away win over Yanbian on July 29, 2017 Finds debuted. He scored his first goal in the Chinese Super League on August 20, 2017 in the 1-1 away game against Changchun Yatai with the equalizer in the 90th minute. During the 2018 season , Modeste terminated his contract with Tianjin Quanjian due to allegedly outstanding salary payments. However, since the contract situation was quite opaque and the legality of the contract termination was doubtful and Tianjin Quanjian Modeste did not want to let go without further ado, this initially found no club for the new season.

Return to 1. FC Köln

From the beginning of October 2018, Modeste initially trained with his former club 1. FC Köln in the second team to keep himself fit. In mid-November 2018, the return of the former fan favorite Modeste to 1. FC Köln was announced as part of the 70th birthday party of 1. FC Köln, which is now playing in the 2nd Bundesliga . Modeste signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2023. The former SPD chancellor candidate and EU Parliament President Martin Schulz is said to have played a decisive role in Modeste's return to FC: Schulz told Bild-Zeitung that he was in China "A few connections" and able to make it clear to the Chinese club representatives with great skill that Modeste "is better off in Cologne than in China".

After returning to FC, Modeste said in a conciliatory manner: "I'm just happy to be back at the club where I'm at home." Modeste's commitment was therefore also a sign of reconciliation with fans of 1. FC Köln, where he was partially out of favor due to the change in 2017, and Vice President Toni Schumacher . After the unfortunate change procedure in the summer of 2017, he said it was nice that Modeste had been there, now it was nice that he had changed. Whether Modeste had effectively terminated his contract in Tianjin was still disputed at the turn of 2019. The FIFA had confirmed in a decision of 7 December 2018 payment claims against his Modestes Altverein but given no clear opinion on his current contract status. On January 29, 2019, 1. FC Köln - regardless of the procedure between Modeste and his former club - applied to FIFA for eligibility to play for Modeste, which Modeste received on February 14, 2019. A day later Modeste made his comeback when he was substituted on in the 3-2 defeat against SC Paderborn 07 and a few minutes later achieved the 2-0 lead. Modeste made his first home game after his return on the following match day, when he, again as a substitute, contributed two goals to the 3-1 victory of FC against SV Sandhausen .

National team

Modeste went through several French youth teams. Even in his 2016/17 season , which was extremely successful at the club , national coach Didier Deschamps did not bring him into his A-Eleven squad because he was on the offensive alongside the well-established trio Payet - Griezmann - Giroud with a view towards the 2018 World Cup on very young strikers ( Coman , Dembélé , Fekir , Lemar , Martial , Mbappé ) bet and also had three veterans up their sleeves with Lacazette , Benzema and Gameiro .
