Elvis Rexhbeçaj [ ɾɛd͡ʒbet͡ʃaɪ ] (born November 1, 1997 in Gjonaj , Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ; today in the Prizren district , Kosovo ) is a German football player . He is under contract as a loan player from VfL Wolfsburg to 1. FC Köln .

Career

The Kosovar Albanian Rexhbeçaj, who was born in Gjonaj in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (now in the Prizren district in Kosovo), fled to Germany with his family as a child at the age of two before the war in Kosovo . The family lived there in Spremberg before they settled in Brandenburg an der Havel .

Rexhbeçaj started playing football in the F-youth team at Brandenburger SC Süd 05 before moving to the D-youth team at VfL Wolfsburg in 2010 at the age of twelve . At this time he was already being courted by other Bundesliga clubs, but moved to Wolfsburg because his family could accompany him there and he did not have to go to boarding school as a result. His father, who had previously worked in a large bakery, got a job as groundskeeper at VfL Wolfsburg . In October 2016 Rexhbeçaj ran for the first time for the second team in the Regionalliga Nord against Eintracht Norderstedt when he was in the starting line-up and was substituted in the 55th minute.

For the 2017/18 season, Rexhbeçaj moved up to the professional squad. On August 20, 2017, he received his first professional contract with a term until June 30, 2020. He made his Bundesliga debut on January 28, 2018 against Hannover 96 , when he came on for Daniel Didavi in the 84th minute . In the 0: 3 against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on March 10, 2018, where coach Bruno Labbadia called him into the starting eleven because of many injured professionals, he played over 90 minutes for the first team for the first time. On January 20, 2019, the 18th matchday of the 2018/19 season, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 1: 2 away defeat against FC Schalke 04 . In May 2019, Rexhbeçaj's contract was prematurely extended until 2023.

After only five competitive appearances (three of them for the regional league team) in the first half of the 2019/20 season, the midfielder was loaned out to league rivals 1. FC Köln for 18 months during the winter break. By the end of the season he had 13 league games, seven of which were in the starting line-up, and was used in various midfield positions.
