Player observer at the DFB

Joachim Löw , from 2004 to 2006 assistant coach of the national team of Germany and since 2006 chief coach of the national team, was a player and coach a. a. also active in Switzerland (including in Schaffhausen and Winterthur ). As a result, Löw had built a network in Switzerland and a good relationship with Siegenthaler; Löw brought Siegenthaler to the DFB as chief scout . Siegenthaler took on the task that was initially intended for Berti Vogts . Siegenthaler's first appearance was at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany . The appointment was initially viewed with skepticism in the German media.

In February 2010 Siegenthaler accepted an offer from Hamburger SV to work there as a sporting director for three years from August 2010. Siegenthaler canceled four days before the agreed start. The reason was that the DFB refused to work in a double role for HSV and for the national team. This in turn was based on the fact that Joachim Löw's contract with the DFB had been extended after the successful performance at the 2010 World Cup and the latter wanted to keep his team together - when Siegenthaler signed the contract with HSV in February 2010, the future of the national coach was still uncertain . Siegenthaler ultimately decided to work for the DFB.

Between March 2016 and September 2016 Siegenthaler was a member of the Board of Directors of Young Boys Bern .
