Middelstum ( Gronings Milnsom ) is a place in the Dutch municipality of Loppersum in the province of Groningen . In January 2017, 2,370 people lived in Middelstum.

Middelstum was also the name of the former municipality of Middelstum, whose capital was Middelstum. But in 1990 this parish was merged into the two parishes of Loppersum and Eemsmond , the former Hefshuizen.

history

Middelstum was first mentioned in the 9th century in a deed of donation that was given to a monastery in Fulda Land. The large Sint-Hippolytuskerk church, built in the fifteenth century, dominates the townscape of Middelstum. There is also a small museum from the 17th century . To the north of the town center, the foundation walls of the gate of Ewsum Castle, which was laid down in 1863, can still be seen.

On August 8, 2006, an earthquake struck Middelstum. It had a strength of 3.5 on the Richter scale and is seen as a result of the settlement in the context of natural gas production in the region. It was the worst earthquake to date in the northern provinces of the Netherlands.
