Church and terp

Funnix is a district of the city Wittmund of the same district Wittmund in Lower Saxony . The village and parish church of Funnix are on a hill .

history

When Funnix was founded in the 11th century, dyke construction was not yet the most common method of flood protection on the North Sea . Most of the time, the villages were built on artificially piled hills, the so-called terps. In addition, Funnix also had a low dike. Probable remains of the foundations of a 15th century castle, the Ihnkeburg, have been found south of Funnix.

Only in 1550 the systematic reclamation of parts began Harlebucht for land reclamation, 1599 was Sielort Funnixsiel founded north of Funnix the newly established dike. Progressive land reclamation led to the foundation of Neufunnixsiel in 1658, on the occasion of which Funnixsiel was renamed Altfunnixsiel.

The new dykes in Harlingerland could not withstand every flood. The heaviest storm surge in the history of East Frisia was the Christmas flood of December 24th to 25th, 1717. The sea water caused great devastation and flooding in large parts of East Frisia up to the Geestrand . Wittmund, Jever and Burhafe were spared, but in the parish of Funnix alone there were 243 deaths. Funnix was thus one of the worst hit villages. It took years to restore the old dike line.

A little later, however, new embankments began, where Carolinensiel was founded as the sewage site . More recently, Harlesiel (1953) was the youngest Sielort for the time being. Until the 1960s, the three places Funnix, Altfunnixsiel and Neufunnixsiel formed an independent municipality, but were then combined with Carolinensiel and Harlesiel to form a joint municipality. Later it was incorporated into Wittmund.

Altfunnixsiel is now a state-approved resort . Like Neufunnixsiel, it is particularly shaped by tourism.

Attractions

Parish Church of St. Florian

The brick church of St. Florian in Funnix , which stands on a high terp, was built in the 14th century. The isolated bell tower dates back to the 13th century. Finds of grave slabs from the 12th century, which were discovered during restoration work, also point to a previous building at the same location.

The rich furnishings of the church include a baptismal font and a holy water font from the 12th century. A special feature is the carved altar from the 15th century with 105 interchangeable figures, which according to legend a one-armed servant is said to have created. The baroque pulpit by Jacob Cröpelin from Esens comes from the 17th century, the organ ( Rococo ) by JF Constabel and HJ Müller from Wittmund from 1760–1762.

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church has been part of the “Reliably Open Churches” association since 2007 . The attractiveness for tourists should be increased with regular opening times.

Funnix sculpture garden

The Wübbena collection of the Wittmund sculptor Leonard Wübbena can be visited in a sculpture garden of about one hectare across from the church . In addition to many of Wübbena's steel works, sculptures by some friends from Germany and the Netherlands can be viewed.
