Oudeschip is the northernmost town in the Netherlands . It belongs to the municipality of Het Hogeland and is located in the province of Groningen .
Infrastructure
Since the Eemshaven is north of the village , the transport links are well developed. In the east, the N33 passes the village, in the west the N46, which connects the Eemshaven directly with Groningen .
The village itself has only a few streets: the Dijkweg, which runs along the old dike from west to east, the Molenweg, the Derk Luddesweg and the Buitenweg, which connect the village with Oosteinde and Roodeschool.
Facilities
The old school on Dijkweg was closed a few decades ago. Therefore, the children who live in Oudeschip attend schools in the surrounding villages. The village house "Diggelschip" is located on Molenweg and is the only public facility in the village. The "Diggelschip" is right next to the playground and a general store.
history
The name "Oudeschip" (translated roughly: "Old Ship") is traced back to the fact that a ship that was stranded on the old dike was said to have been lying on the old dike for years . The first documentary mention goes back to 1778.
In the west, the dike has a kink today, because it broke there around 1750 during a storm surge , which left a deep hole, the so-called Aeilsgat .
