The Aeilsgat

The Aeilsgat (also Eiltsgat is called) a Kolk behind a sleeping dike west of the Dutch village Oudeschip that emerged around the year 1750 when a dike breakthrough.

The Aeilsgat is said to have its name after a legend in which a farmer named Eilt drowned in the kolk with his horse and carriage. Before that happened, lights could be seen on the water at night. After Eilt drowned, the lights disappeared.

Aeilsgat is also known under the name Michieltjeskolk , because someone is said to have drowned again in the same way later.

There is now a warning sign in front of Aeilsgat, warning of its depth - it is estimated at ninety meters. Therefore there are also stories that say that a mermaid lives in the seemingly bottomless kolk, who was washed into the Aeilsgat together with the water when the dyke breached.
