The Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland is an open-air museum in the village of Warffum in the Dutch province of Groningen . The museum is located within the village on a relatively narrow area and consists mainly of houses preserved there in situ.

The name of the museum, founded in 1959, also refers to the Hogeland region in the north of the province of Groningen. This region, in which the village of Warffum is also located, is characterized by fertile marshland and agriculture has played an important role here over the centuries.

The museum shows the history of a village on the flat land up to 1920. There are also thematic exhibitions on handicrafts, handicrafts, health and schooling. Most of the buildings in the open-air museum are preserved in situ . Over the years the museum has been expanded with relocated buildings, some buildings are inhabited.

The following houses can be found in the museum:

  • The schoolhouse is dated to the end of the 19th century . Today it is the entrance building of the museum and is used as an exhibition building. One room is set up as a classroom in 1920.
  • The Markus house , also known as the Jewish butcher , is the former home of the Jewish merchant Abraham Markus and one of the four Jewish butchers in Warffum around 1900. The house, built in 1834, shows Jewish life in Hogeland in an exhibition.
  • The sexton house is the former apartment of the sexton von Warffum. Two rooms and the kitchen are furnished in the style of the early 19th century when the building was built.
  • Haus Bie Koboa is a combination of a village inn and a village shop. It was furnished in the style of 1850 and named after its last owner Jacoba Werkema .
  • The Laméris house is the former home of the first state-certified veterinarian in Warffum, Kornelis Jacobus Laméris . In the building there is an office, a veterinary practice and a coach house with stables.
  • The Venhoes was built in 1790 as a one-room apartment and is furnished as a day laborer's apartment. It is named after its last resident Jantje Venhuizen .
  • The Blauhoes is a dyke house from 1850 from Den Andel . It was set up as a village printer and apartment from around 1920.
  • The history of the De Vaarverij house from Uithuizen goes back to 1850. It is set up in the museum as an apartment and paint shop in 1900.
  • The captain's house Het Schippershoes comes from Termunterzijl and was built in 1861. Inside, the life of a seaman and the history of the North Sea island Rottumeroog in the Wadden Sea is depicted.
  • The Vrouwe Fransens Gasthuis , built in 1668, was a hospice for older women of the Reformed faith from the city of Groningen .
  • The mill De David is a small wind- powered sawmill built in 1890 from Thesinge . It was completely renovated in 2013, repaired and transferred to the museum.

In the museum grounds there is a caravan from around 1920, as it was used by traveling merchants , chair weavers and scissors grinders who had offered their services all over the province. The museum also has a small visitor center ( archaeological information point ), which is also used as an auditorium and is housed in a listed building that used to be a kindergarten and sports hall.

The museum offers a museum educational program . A special learning package is offered for primary school students.
