Termunten is a Dutch coastal town in the province of Groningen . It has 575 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and has been part of the Delfzijl municipality since 1990 .

geography

The place is about 8 kilometers southeast of the city of Delfzijl and 30 kilometers northeast of Groningen at the mouth of the Ems in the North Sea . In the east of the village lies the Dollart , which is separated from the mouth of the Ems by the Punt van Reide peninsula northeast of Termunten .

Termunten Church

In the middle of the town center on a hill (terp) the church of Termunten was built around 1250. The mighty, raised building made of brick masonry towers far over the dyke and polder landscape . The raised side facades are heavily structured with pilaster strips (protruding brickwork) and long window openings. The round light openings framed with sandstone are striking in the lower area. The church has no side portals, but the central west entrance in the attached bell tower. There are also remains of the wall in the facade area, which once formed the side wings, but are no longer there today.

Termunterzijl

The Siel (Dutch: Zijl ) of Termunten is located in the Termunterzijl district, which gave the district its name. Both districts practically merge with their settlements. In Termunterzijl you will find the restored old sluice (dyke sluice) from the late 18th century. The sewer building consists mainly of bricks. The upper front of the building, i.e. the bridge crossing, is decorated with sandstone and inscriptions. The new sewer is about 150 meters from the old sewer, seaward. The port of Termunterzijl is approached by sport boats and smaller cargo ships.
