The small uninhabited dune island Simonszand is located in the Wadden Sea between Schiermonnikoog and Rottumerplaat . It belongs to the municipality of Het Hogeland .
The island consists of an elongated high sand approx. 1.5 km long and approx. 750 meters wide. It plays an important role as a resting place for birds like the red knot and other sandpipers, as well as ducks . Simonszand is also an important resting place for seals and their offspring. Therefore, in 1999 the Ministerie van Landbouw decided that sailors were no longer allowed to let their ships dry out near the island, as this significantly disturbed the peace and quiet of the seals.
