Jabbin (formerly Joim ) is a cross-platform free software for instant messaging (chat) and IP telephony via the XMP protocols . The latest version 3.0 beta is currently only offered in a Windows version.

features

Jabbin offers common messenger functions. In addition, central parts of the functionality are IP telephony via XMPP protocols and integration with social networks in order to provide central information about events there (aggregator function). Jabbin offers extensive softphone functionality with a dial pad, address book and call list and is an alternative to the popular software Skype , which is compatible with many other IP telephony products (such as Google Talk ).

It supports point-to-point encryption using TLS and, for text chat, end-to-end encryption based on the OpenPGP standard.

Availability

Jabbin is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is available for Linux and Windows systems; a version for macOS is in development. For many Linux distributions there are precompiled binary packages (from version 2). There is also an official installation-free version for Windows .

technology

It is developed in C ++ with a graphical user interface based on the Qt library. It communicates using the XMPP protocols and Jingle Audio , the VoIP functions from XMPP's more recent peer-to-peer extension " Jingle ". The free speech codec " Speex " is used for the audio connections . The implementation from the OpenSSL project is included for TLS encryption .

history

Jabbin emerged as a spin-off from Psi with the addition of support for IP telephony as the main difference. The first beta version (1.0) came out in December 2005, which was based on the Psi development version 0.10 and was still called "Joim". It was the first XMPP client with support for IP telephony, which was still handled with the now outdated protocol extension Transport for Initiating and Negotiating Sessions ( TINS ). After the standardization of the successor protocol “Jingle”, a later version of VoIP support was also available in Psi on this basis and is now part of the functional scope of many important XMPP clients. Jabbin has also been using Jingle since beta version 2.0 and has taken over the corresponding code from Psi. After the jingle standardization and the appearance of Google Talk, it was initially still the only XMPP VoIP client for Linux systems and the only open source client with jingle support, since the Psi project started with the release of a version with the then still experimental jingle support until the end of June 2009.

After years without any signs of life, the Jabbin project released a new version (Beta 3.0, "Flaming Phoenix") on January 25, 2010 (initially only for Windows systems). It now enables integration with various social networks.
