The Provincial away 361 (short: N361) is a Dutch highway in the provinces of Friesland and Groningen , of the city of Groningen on Lauwersoog to Rijperkerk runs. The Frisian part of the street is also called Lauwersseewei ( West Frisian for Lauwerseestrasse ). In Rijperkerk the road joins the N355 towards Leeuwarden .

The road begins in the north of Groningen at the Van Starkenborghkanaal and runs through Adorp and Sauwerd . At Winsum he crosses the N363 at a roundabout . Between Mensingeweer and Ulrum , the road runs on the route of the former Winsum – Zoutkamp ( Marnelijn ) railway line , which only existed from 1922 to 1942.

The N361 is a car road between Oudkerk and Dokkum and between Dokkum-Noord and Lauwersoog . Due to the fact that the road is the only road from Dokkum in the direction of Leeuwarden, this road is also used as the main route between these two places. The street cuts through the town centers and thus affects the lives of the residents. Because Dokkum has a good four-lane connection with Hurdegaryp with the N356 , the N361 is relieved. The residents have proposed similar measures to calm the traffic on the road between Oudkerk (West Frisian Aldtsjerk ) and Dokkum.

Redesign

In the past, plans have been made to provide Winsum, Sauwerd and Adorp with a bypass road to direct traffic around the town centers. The consideration of bypassing Winsum was dropped because the N361 runs on the outskirts anyway. The plans to redesign the route towards Groningen were rejected on January 24, 2011 by the Winsum municipal administration on January 24, 2011. The planned course aroused too much resistance from farmers and nature conservationists. The new provincial government of Groningen also announced on April 4, 2011 that it has now completely given up planning to build the N361.

A few years ago, however, due to the many problems that the heavily used road on its approx. 37 kilometers between Groningen and Lauwersoog, a program has been launched in cooperation with all neighboring communities (“Project N361 Veilig”), which is intended to significantly improve safety (ndl. Veilig ) and the flow of traffic. Conversion work, repairs, widening and redesigned intersection areas were partly started in 2015. Together with increased traffic controls, the existing number of accidents is to be drastically reduced by at least 50%: From today's 70 accidents per year to 35 accidents per year and fatal accidents from 15 road fatalities per year to a maximum of seven fatalities per year.
