Turf

A sod (in Low German "Hullen") or turf tile (Latin: Caespites) is a cut, square piece of sod . In humid areas, these pieces were used as building materials for houses.

For example, in Iceland , sod was used as a building material for sod houses . They were also used as covering material or building material for ancient burial mounds . In England, turf was used to create sports turf from the 17th century. In the Upper Harz water shelf and the Lower Harz pond and ditch system , they were also used to seal pond dams.

Also turf or turf is a piece of a peeled to measure sward . If this is so long that it can be rolled up, it is also called turf . It is used, for example, for soccer fields and gardens, and is rolled up for transport. Finished turf is also available in plagues or in folded instead of rolled form, depending on the manufacturing process. The standard sod is produced by separating the roots of the sward 1–2 centimeters below the surface from the subsoil. The side margins are cut with a cutting disc. The production of ready-made turf takes place in lawn schools. The dimensions for 1 square meter of turf are: length: 250 centimeters and width: 40 centimeters.

The Low German term Plaggen is sometimes used synonymously; but the two terms are not identical. Both are tapping of the humus topsoil with parts of the vegetation on it . Unlike turf, however, pests were usually won in forests or heaths . Their purpose was also different: the plague economy aimed to fertilize arable land.

At least twelve months should pass before peeling so that the soil is well rooted. Well-rooted sod leaves little room for weeds. The use of herbicides in the fields is considered to be unavoidable when rearing turf.

Laying of turf

There are two common methods of greening a sports field : sowing and using turf. Most of the football stadiums will be fitted with turf, as there should not be much time between the removal of the old sod and the completion of a new field.

After a field has been sown, it takes a lot more time until the pitch is inaugurated than after the turf has been laid. It takes at least six months, but usually a good year, for the seeds to become a playing field that can be used without restriction.

Basically, a distinction is made between thin sod (peeling thickness approx. 2 cm) and thick sod (peeling thickness over 4 cm). The latter bring significantly more soil with them. The thin sod takes root more quickly, as more roots have been cut and thus more root erosion takes place.

Greening by means of traditional sowing with high-quality seeds costs only a fraction of what the laying of turf, especially thick sod, costs. With the "sandwich construction" it is also possible to lay the new lawn over the old one. A sports field can be covered with turf in two working days. The prerequisite is almost always the previous peeling off of the old scar and the preparation of the surface for laying. The substructure according to DIN 18035 including drainage must also be in place.
