Madurodam
Madurodam is a miniature park in the Scheveningen district of The Hague and is considered one of the largest tourist attractions in the Netherlands . The facility on an area of around 18,000 m² contains over 300 models of the most important buildings, landscape sections and technical objects in the country on a scale of 1:25; many are animated . With the facility, which was built in 1950 and officially opened in July 1952, the Maduro couple wanted to preserve the memory of their son, Lieutenant George Maduro , who died in 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp .
Figurative sense
Since Madurodam as “Netherlands in miniature” stands for a kind of ideal world , the term is often used in Dutch politics in connection with alleged naivety. For example, MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali referred to the former mayor of Amsterdam , Job Cohen , as “burgemeester van Madurodam” (Mayor of Madurodam) because, in her opinion, he was too cautious about Islamist extremists in his city.
