The railway line Breda-Rotterdam also Staatslijn I is a railway line between Breda and Rotterdam . The railway line is an important railway line in the south of the Netherlands. The length of the route is about 60 kilometers.

history

On July 1, 1866, the first section between Breda and Moerdijk was opened. The section between Lage Zwaluwe and Dordrecht was inaugurated on January 1, 1872. The line between Dordrecht and the Rotterdam-Mallegat stop was opened to traffic ten months later. The section between Rotterdam-Mallegat and Rotterdam Delftsche Poort was opened on May 1, 1877. The Rotterdam Centraal Station replaced the Rotterdam Delftsche Poort station. In 1950 the line was electrified. In 1994 the Willemsspoortunnel (railway tunnel) was opened in the center of Rotterdam. Since then, the trains no longer drove over the inner-city elevated railway line and the De Hef bridge , but only through the tunnel.

course

The route begins at Breda train station, from there the route continues northwards through a rather sparsely populated area to the border to the station in Lage Zwaluwe, where you can change trains to Antwerp. Shortly afterwards it crosses the Hollands Diep over a two-and-a-half kilometer bridge parallel to the A 16 and the new high-speed route Antwerp – Amsterdam. After the Diep, the route runs from south to north through the city of Dordrecht. After Dordrecht, the line continues with four tracks to Rotterdam Central Station.

Train traffic

At the moment, the Inter-City trains run from The Hague via Breda to Venlo as well as the express train from Amsterdam to Breda, the night train from Eindhoven via Breda and The Hague to Amsterdam. On the section between Rotterdam, the Thalys run from Paris to Amsterdam , the Inter-Citys from Amsterdam to Brussels (Beneluxtrein) and from Amsterdam to Vlissingen and the regional train from The Hague to Roosendaal.
