The Antwerp-Lage Zwaluwe railway line (also called Line 12 ) is a cross-border railway line between Antwerp ( Belgium ) and Lage Zwaluwe ( Netherlands ). The railway line is the oldest and most important railway line between Belgium and the Netherlands. The route is about 64 km long, 33 km of which are in Belgium and 31 km in the Netherlands.

history

On July 9, 1852, Belgium and the Netherlands signed an agreement to build a new railway line that would connect Antwerp with Rotterdam . On June 26, 1854, the line between Antwerp and Roosendaal was opened. Four months later, the section between Roosendaal and Oudenbosch was also completed . The entire route was officially opened on May 1, 1876.

course

The route begins at the main train station in Antwerp , from there the route runs east of the center via the Antwerpen-Oost and Antwerpen-Dam stations . It then runs for a short time parallel to the HSL 4 high- speed line ( Schiphol – Antwerp high-speed line ), but this separates after the Antwerpen-Noorderdokken station and continues parallel to the A1 . The railway line continues north through a rather sparsely populated area to the border with the Netherlands. Shortly thereafter comes the Roosendaal junction station , where you can change to Vlissingen and Amsterdam .

The line ends at the station in Lage Zwaluwe, directly south of the Moerdijk bridges over the Hollands Diep .

Train traffic

Until the high-speed line Antwerp-Amsterdam goes into operation, the line will be the most important rail link for national and international trains between Belgium and the Netherlands, but it is scheduled to open on October 1st, which will allow Thalys trains and most IC trains to use the new line be guided.

Currently, the Thalys route from Paris to Amsterdam operates . Intercity trains from Brussels to Amsterdam and regional trains from Antwerp to Roosendaal.

Only in Belgium does an Intercity run from Charleroi via Brussels to Essen . On the Dutch side, there are hourly intercity trains from Vlissingen to Amsterdam and a regional train from Roosendaal to The Hague .
