Location of Rijnsburg in the municipality of Katwijk |
Rijnsburg is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland with 15,840 inhabitants.
history
There was a Frisian village on the grounds of Rijnsburg in the sixth century, as archaeological finds show. It was mentioned in a document in a church script from around 750 with the words Rudolfsheim dat nu Rinasburg wordt genoemd ( Rudolfsheim is now called Rinasburg). On August 10, 975, Count Dirk II won a fight against the West Frisians near Rinasburg and donated the St. Laurentius Chapel out of gratitude. At the beginning of the 12th century, Petronilla of Holland founded a convent for noble nuns near this chapel . In 1570 the monastery was destroyed, only the south tower has been preserved. On January 1, 2006, Rijnsburg was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Katwijk .
