history

In 1986, stimulated by the media presence of the Halley comet , a group of people interested in astronomy met in Bad Kreuznach. The "Verein der Sternfreunde eV Bad Kreuznach" was founded with the aim of building and operating a public observatory .

In 1987 the first reflector telescope was purchased. In 1989, a site on the Kuhberg was rented to build an observatory there. In 1995 the observatory was inaugurated. In 1999 the public observatory was expanded to include a lecture building, and in 2000 another building with two permanently installed telescopes for astrophotography followed . In 2003, a planet path was inaugurated, which leads from the Roseninsel in Bad Kreuznach through the Salinental to Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg .

The Volkssternwarte Bad Kreuznach regularly offers public observations of the sky, astronomical lectures and VHS courses. The focus is not only on imparting astronomical and physical knowledge, but also on merging natural sciences. Since 2007 there has been a youth group that introduces girls and boys to astronomy in a playful way. Also, model rockets are started several times a year on a site near the observatory.

Instruments

A computer-controlled 12 "Meade LX 200 EMC and a Dobsonian telescope with 35 cm aperture are used for observation . A Lunt ST152 / 900 Ha B3400 H-alpha telescope allows the observation of protuberances on the sun, and a high-resolution spectroscope is also available Several pillars on the club premises allow the assembly of mobile devices.
