The Mariënberg – Almelo railway was opened on October 1, 1906 and connects Mariënberg station with Almelo station in the Netherlands . The railway line is single-track with crossings in Vroomshoop and Vriezenveen.

history

Vroomshoop station (1998)

The railway line is a branch of the Zwolle – Stadskanaal railway line , it was created by the Noordoosterlocaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (NOLS). At the beginning of the 20th century, the line was a decisive part of the connection between Twente and the port in Delfzijl . Even before the Second World War, parts of the NOLS rail network were closed and the Mariënberg – Almelo line also lost its importance. The line has never had an important function for passenger traffic, until 1996 the transport of oil from Schoonebeek to Pernis was more important .

In addition to passenger traffic, the line is still used for freight traffic to Coevorden .

business

Mariënberg station with a "Veenexxpres"

Mariënberg – Almelo was the first railway line in the Netherlands to be privatized. In 1998, Oostnet took over rail operations from the Nederlandse Spoorwegen . Oostnet took the Plan-X train on the route. This was the last route in the Netherlands on which Plan X trains were in operation as scheduled.

From 2002 the route was used by Connexion, who rented two "Wadlopers" for this traffic. Wadloper was changed to "Veenexxpres". Syntus later drove on behalf of Connexion. Two LINT trains were bought and painted red.

From December 2013 to December 2027 Template: future / in 5 yearsruns Arriva between Almelo and Hardenberg.
