affected areas | Germany |
The rain depression Cathleen was a low pressure area which brought very large amounts of rain in northern Westphalia and the Weser-Ems area. Due to the resulting flooding, the disaster alarm was triggered in several counties and cities. With a rainfall of more than 130 l / m² in 30 hours, new records were set at many weather stations. Mainly affected the city were Osnabrück , Steinfurt , Kreis Borken , Emsland district , the district of Osnabrück and the district of Minden-Lübbecke .
Weather situation
On August 26, 2010, in the area of the affected areas, a subtropical warm front from the south met a cold air front from the deep Cathleen from the north. Since the air masses were moving very slowly, the rain front remained in the same area for a long time before moving very slowly south on August 27th.
The highest registered value was in Steinfurt and, at 187.5 mm in 31 hours, roughly corresponds to the average rainfall for a quarter.
Effects
North Rhine-Westphalia
Borken district
Ahaus
In Ahaus, the sewage treatment plant threatened to be flooded. A bridge was washed away and there were power outages.
Heek
In Heek, the spelled dike was reinforced with sandbags . The local firefighters were supported by staff from Dortmund.
Legden
The Düstermühlemarkt was flooded with the rides on it. In the Asbeck district, the Mühlenbach overflowed its banks and flooded the town center.
Steinfurt district
District Administrator Thomas Kubendorff triggered the disaster alarm for the Steinfurt district on Friday, August 27 at 0:15 a.m. In the whole district horses and cows had to be rescued from pastures because they were threatened with drowning.
Emsdetten
In Emsdetten, the Mühlenbach overflowed its banks and caused floods in the urban area.
Ibbenbueren
The signal box at Esch station was flooded, so that no operation on the Rheine-Löhne railway was possible. The railway set up a bus service between Osnabrück and Rheine.
Lotte
The Sportfreunde Lotte had to because of the rains a benefit match in their stadium with VfL Osnabrück and renounce FC Real.
Ochtrup
In the district of Langenhorst , parts of the local situation were flooded. Since three bodies of water converge here with Vechte, Feldbach and Farbbach, they overflowed their banks over a large area.
Rheine
In Rheine, a rain retention basin threatened to flood an industrial area, and the roof of a bicycle wholesaler collapsed. Several underpasses were full.
Tecklenburg
The rains led to a dam slide on the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof railway line of the Teutoburg Forest Railway near Brochterbeck , which almost led to the entire line being closed, as the line operator did not see any economic viability of the repair.
More places
In Bad Salzuflen , a tornado covered two roofs and uprooted several trees.
Lower Saxony
City of Osnabrück
August 2010 was the wettest since records began in Osnabrück (1891).
26th of August
The A1 became impassable on Thursday evening because water was accumulating on the road. The A 30 near Nahne was flooded from Friday night.
August 27
On the night of Friday from 0:30 a.m., the Osnabrück Benedictine monastery was flooded. The valuable wafer machine of the monastery was saved by the fire brigade and the THW . Here the Hasepegel reached a new record high of 2.48 meters. On August 27, 2010 at 4 a.m., the then mayor Boris Pistorius triggered the disaster alarm for the first time since 1945.
aftermath
During the clean-up work in the city, 700 tons of bulky waste were removed from the damaged houses. This meant extra expenses for municipal garbage collection in the amount of 200,000 euros. The OPG parking garage Vitihof was a technical total loss due to the rain and had to be overhauled. The supervisor's hut, the computer system and the heating oil tanks could not do anything to counter the water standing up to 1.60 m in the parking garage. After quick repairs, the car park went back into operation on September 14th.
After the water had receded, Mindener Strasse had to remain closed until September 2nd to repair the damage. Despite the fact that the masts were in the water in the transformer station in Lüstringen , firefighters from Pewsum in the Aurich district were able to keep the buildings free from water so that the electricity did not fail.
District of Osnabrück
On Thursday, August 26th, after hours of continuous rain, the autobahn under the Osnabrück-Nord driveway was flooded. Several slopes slide off. In Wallenhorst - Hollage , the hare ran across the dike into the Osnabrück canal , which led to the dam breaking, but without any further consequences. The Alfsee and the reserve basin were dammed with the water from the Hase to protect the lower reaches of the Hase from severe flooding.
The dam breach was repaired shortly afterwards and an emergency relief was built on the branch canal in memory of the dam breaches in 1960 and 1981.
In Bramsche, the partially completed flood basin on Lake Hasesee passed its baptism of fire for the first time, thus preventing major damage to the city.
Emsland district
In Spelle, an industrial area was flooded by the Speller Aa.
County of Grafschaft Bentheim
On August 29, the flood peak reached Nordhorn. In the city, sandbags were placed on the banks of the Vechte.
Other federal states
Heavy rainfall also fell in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . Numerous streets were flooded and cellars overflowed. However, the extent of the damage here lagged far behind that of the north.
