history

The Münsterländische Volkszeitung was founded in 1878 by Joseph Altmeppen, who operated under the company name J. Altmeppen u. Co. started a printing and publishing company. The MV first appeared under the title Rheiner Volksblatt . This has been retained as a subtitle to this day. Company founder Joseph Altmeppen died at the age of 33 on May 19, 1888. The company was continued by the two brothers Heinrich and Johannes. Britta Altmeppen-Rekers has been running the family business in the fourth generation since 1998.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung , as it was called since 1906, was the largest newspaper in the Steinfurt district and even appeared in the southern Emsland. As a result of the hyperinflation after the First World War , the Münsterländische Volkszeitung merged with other small and medium-sized publishers for economic reasons to form the newspaper publishing company Nordwestdeutschland (ZENO, today Münsterland newspaper group, ZGM). From then on, printing and production of the cover pages were in common hands.

During the time of National Socialism, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung was not spared the fate of many other newspapers in Germany. Because of ideologically inconsistent views, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung was initially “brought into line” by the National Socialists - and later even expropriated. On July 1, 1940, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung stopped its publication.

A few days after the end of the Second World War there was already a daily newspaper in Rheine. The Altmeppen publishing house was entrusted with the distribution and recording of advertisements for the Neue Westfälische Zeitung published by the military government . In their place came the Westfälische Nachrichten , for which the Altmeppen publishing house also received the distribution rights. On November 12, 1949, after the license requirement was lifted, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung appeared again under its old title.

In autumn 2014 the Altmeppen publishing company took over the free Münster advertising paper Buy + Sparen and the Emsdettener Volkszeitung from Medienhaus Lensing .

Edition

In contrast to most German daily newspapers , the Münsterländische Volkszeitung has been able to maintain its circulation in recent years.
