history

The Lensing media company was founded by the brothers Heinrich and Lambert Lensing in 1870. From 1875 they published the local daily Tremonia in Dortmund ; its first regular edition came onto the newspaper market on January 1, 1876, the last in April 1945. During National Socialism , Tremonia was one of the few newspapers in Germany to remain formally independent, but it was published under the supervision of the police chief. Due to this supposed closeness to the rulers, the British zone administration gave Lambert Lensing , son of the co-founder, a license to publish a daily newspaper again in 1949. The Ruhr Nachrichten began as the successor to the Tremonia with a circulation of 120,150 copies. Lensing Media's expansion in Westphalia began in 1919 with the takeover of the Ahauser Kreisblatt . In 1949 the Dorstener Volkszeitung and the Halterner Zeitung came to the publishing house. Since 1976 the media company has held a 40 percent stake in the J. Bauer KG publishing house in Marl, which publishes the Recklinghäuser Zeitung . 1986 the takeover of the Münsterschen Zeitung followed . In 1989 the Emsdettener Volkszeitung was added.

Born in Dortmund, Florian Lensing-Wolff joined the management of the media company in 1957. After the death of his uncle Lambert Lensing in 1965, he assumed sole responsibility. Florian Lensing-Wolff headed the Lensing media company for more than 40 years; he died on February 4, 2011 at the age of 80. Wolfram Kiwit, editor-in-chief of Ruhr Nachrichten , described him in an obituary as an “old school publicist”. In 1999, Lambert Lensing-Wolff, the son of Florian Lensing-Wolff, took over the management, to which Daniel Süper and Hans-Christian Haarmann also belong.

restructuring

After the takeover of the business by Lambert Lensing-Wolff, the media company went through a phase of restructuring. In 2006 the employees of the publishing house were outsourced to independent, non-collective bargaining companies. The contracts of the employed photo editors were terminated, they were forced into the status of a professional independence. Also in 2006 the local editions of Ruhr Nachrichten in the cities of Gladbeck, Bottrop, Gelsenkirchen and Kamen as well as the Buersche Zeitung in Gelsenkirchen were discontinued. In the triangle of Gelsenkirchen, Gladbeck and Bottrop, the competitor Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) has since been able to act as a monopoly.

In the same year, the WAZ stopped its issues in the cities of Haltern am See, Datteln, Herten, Marl, Oer-Erkenschwick, Recklinghausen and Waltrop or summarized the local reporting under the name Unser Vest , whereby articles from the titles of the Bauer- Publishing house; thus he has a quasi-monopoly with his local editorial offices. A cooperation between Lensing Media and WAZ also exists in the area of printing. Since the restructuring in 2006, Lensing Media had its editions Bochum, Witten and Castrop-Rauxel printed in the printing and publishing center (DVZ) Hagen-Bathey, which belongs to the Funke media group .

Lensing Media also came under public criticism in January 2007 when the entire 19-person local and sports editorial team at the Münsterschen Zeitung was dismissed .

In September 2014 the Federal Cartel Office approved a deal with the competitor Aschendorff Verlag in Münster. The publisher of the Westfälische Nachrichten was allowed to take over the Münstersche Zeitung and the Grevener Zeitung in a so-called restructuring merger. As with the dismissal of the entire editorial staff in 2007, Lensing chose the reason for this step that the Münstersche Zeitung had been in the red for years. This means that there is a monopoly on the newspaper market in Münster. Only the free advertising paper Buy + Sparen was initially to continue to be published by the Lensing media company, but a few weeks later this and the Emsdettener Volkszeitung were also sold to the Altmeppen publishing house in Rheine ( Münsterländische Volkszeitung ).

Cooperations

The Lensing media company intensified its cooperation with the competitor with the development in the Ruhr area publishing area and the relocation of printed matter to the printing house of the Funke Mediengruppe , which industry experts call “land consolidation” . In the segment display leaves a cooperation since December 1977, as jointly established at the time by two publishing houses Ostruhr display sheet company (ORA) since free newspapers are published weekly with a total of 15 titles, which have a total circulation of 1.2 million copies. The ORA advertising papers are part of a group called WVW / ORA advertising papers.

In the second half of 2012, the media house Lensing and its competitors, which are also organized in the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers , continued the previous course; after the closings of editorial offices and branches in the Ruhr area , the north of North Rhine-Westphalia followed. In October 2012 it was announced that the Münstersche Zeitung would cease publication in the cities of Rheine , Neuenkirchen and Wettringen on December 31, 2012 . As a competitor, the Münsterländische Volkszeitung , published by Altmeppen , benefits from this . On this occasion, professional associations and trade unions again emphasized that the diversity of the press in North Rhine-Westphalia is at risk.

In 2013 the cooperation with the competitor Funke Mediengruppe achieved a new quality in the Ruhr area . In January 2013 it was announced that the competitor would be winding up the traditional Dortmund newspaper Westfälische Rundschau and that 120 editors would be dismissed there. The Westfälische Rundschau brand was retained as a medium without its own editors. In the core area of Dortmund, the local parts of the medium are produced by the editorial offices of Ruhr Nachrichten , for the Dortmund , Lünen and Schwerte issues . The remaining elements of the Westfälische Rundschau are produced for these editions by the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . On May 1, the issues of the Westfälische Rundschau for the cities of Unna , Fröndenberg , Holzwickede , Kamen and Bergkamen (total print run: 8,000 copies) were sold to the two publishers Günter Rubens and Hans-Christian Haarmann, i.e. to the Rubens publishing house ( Hellweger Anzeiger ), in which Lensing Media holds shares.

The Dortmund business model became known throughout Germany under the catchphrase "Zombie newspaper" and it was also implemented in Castrop-Rauxel .

In the neighboring cities of Bochum and Witten there were two independent editorial offices of the former competitors Lensing and Funke Mediengruppe for the longest time . In 2014 Lensing announced that it would close its editorial offices there on October 31 of that year.

In 2012, the Ruhr Nachrichten, together with the Hellweger Anzeiger, had a sold circulation of 133,784 copies. Through the cooperation with the Funke media group and the purchase of the Westfälische Rundschau, the steady decline in circulation numbers could be stopped.

In 2018 the media company Lensing was renamed Lensing Media.
