Norbert Strotmann

Norbert Klemens Strotmann Hoppe MSC , also Norberto Strotmann , (born August 14, 1946 in Riesenbeck ) is a German Roman Catholic religious , theologian and university professor . He has been bishop of the Chosica diocese in the east of the Peruvian capital Lima since 1996 .

Life

Strotmann graduated from high school in 1966 at the Kardinal-von-Galen-Gymnasium in Hiltrup , which at that time was operated by the northern German province of the Sacred Heart Missionaries , the so-called "Hiltrup Missionaries". In 1967 Strotmann joined the religious order of the Sacred Heart Missionaries and studied philosophy and theology at the theological faculties of the University of Innsbruck and the Ruhr University in Bochum . Strotmann had already carried out missionary work during his studies in Puquio in the Peruvian region of Ayacucho , where he was ordained a deacon in 1972 . On November 3, 1973 he received in Puquio by Bishop Luis Bambarén Gastelumendi SJ the priesthood . 1973 Strotmann was to work the language of dialogue between Marxists and Christians in Innsbruck with Julius Morel to Dr. theol. doctorate and completed a diploma course in sociology at the University of Bielefeld .

Strotmann was then regional superior and director of the seminary of the Sacred Heart Missionaries in Peru. He was also Professor of Fundamental Theology and Catholic Social Doctrine at the Facultad de Teologia Pontificia y Civil de Lima (FTPCL) and from 1986 to 1992 director of the Centro de Investigaciones Teológicas (CINTE). In 1992 he became rector of the FTPCL. The Holy See appointed him to the International Theological Commission in 1992 .

In 1992 he was appointed titular bishop of Caere by Pope John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Lima . He was ordained bishop on January 6, 1993 in Rome by Pope John Paul II himself; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giovanni Battista Re , then Head of the State Secretariat and later Cardinal to the Curia, and Archbishop Justin Francis Rigali , then Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and later Cardinal. Strotmann's motto is Fides per caritatem (“Faith effective in love”).

In December 1996 Strotmann was initially appointed Apostolic Administrator and in January 1997 appointed the first bishop of the newly founded Diocese of Chosica , which includes the eastern districts of the Peruvian capital Lima.

In 1992 Stotmann became a member of the Grupo de Reflexión Teológica of the Conference of the Bishops of Latin America (CELAM) and later other engagements. Since 2007 he has been responsible for the higher education section of the Latin American Bishops' Conference (CELAM) in the culture and education section , which mainly includes the numerous Catholic universities in Latin America. In the Peruvian Bishops' Conference he is a member of the Commission for Doctrine of the Faith and the Commission for Social Action .

Strotmann has published several academic papers and books on the subject of social teaching in South America. Among other things, he is committed to Christian social teaching in the context of seminars of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and other international conferences. Strotmann is particularly committed to questions about the future of Latin America.

He reports regularly in the Hiltrupermonthshefte , the magazine of the Hiltrup missionaries, about his work in his diocese, which receives both material and personal support from his order.
