From 1985 to 1989 Brinkschulte worked as a research assistant on a DFG research project, then at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Free University of Berlin. During this time, she fulfilled teaching assignments in the reform course of medicine that began at the Charité Berlin in 1999 and in the history of medicine .

Brinkschulte completed his habilitation in 2002 at the Free University of Berlin with the text physical fitness (en). Sports medicine between performance optimization and health promotion 1895–1933. In this she examined the ratio of medical basic scientific research and social role assignment using the example of the female and male body concepts of the emerging sports physiology . Scientific activity and commitment

The main research areas of Brinkschultes are the historical women's and gender history in medicine, patient and hospital history in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of sports medicine and orthopedics , medicine and the public as well as the media culture of medicine.

Brinkschulte realized the traveling exhibition Female Doctors, first shown in Berlin in 1993 . The establishment of the professional profile in Germany , the focus of which was the history of the professional practice of women doctors in Germany from the 1870s to the end of the Second World War. The starting point was the extensive material collection of the librarian Jutta Buchin on women doctors in the German Reich until 1918. In 1995, Buchin was the first to receive the Margherita von Brentano Prize for her commitment . The Brinkschultes exhibition project was honored with a commendation in this context. Female doctors were shown domestically for more than two decades as well as abroad and combined several times with specific exhibition parts on the history of women medicine at individual universities. Brinkschulte acted as a curator.

In 2006, in her historical introduction to career planning for women doctors , Brinkschulte criticized the lexical and historiographical descriptions of women's emancipation in medicine that were still missing at the time :

“The retrospective should first of all make visible the female lines of tradition that were largely concealed in the history of the class. Neither the lexicons of German doctors nor the standard works on the history of medicine deal with the entry of women into the academic professional world of doctors. "

In 2014 she headed the first phase of the research project The German Society for Gynecology (DGG) under National Socialism. On the history of a specialist medical organization under the dictatorship .

In 2014, as a substitute professor and as a deputy director at the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf , Brinkschulte initiated a series of lectures on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 2015, the focus of which was medicine under National Socialism , especially human experiments in the concentration camp Concerning Auschwitz.
