Heimann Wolff Berend was born to Jewish parents in Landsberg / Warthe. At the age of 15 he came to Berlin and attended the Protestant high school at the Gray Monastery . After graduating, he studied medicine from 1828 to 1832 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (today Humboldt-Universität) and graduated with a doctorate. Together with Moritz Michael Eulenburg , he published situs of all the viscera of the skull, chest and abdominal cavity in 1833 .

In 1834 he settled in Berlin as a surgeon. He also worked from 1837 to 1840 as a surgical assistant doctor under Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach at the Charité . In 1840 he founded a gymnastic and orthopedic healing institute in Berlin, which he headed until his death. In 1847 he was able to place more than 70 inpatients here. From 1842 Berend wrote reports on the work in his institute every two years. By 1870, almost 300 case histories had appeared. As an orthopedic surgeon, he used both conservative and surgical procedures. He was the first doctor in Berlin to use ether anesthesia in 1847 and developed several orthopedic auxiliary devices. In the 1850s, he was one of the first medical professionals to start a systematic collection of patient photographs. The first pictures were taken in the summer of 1853 at the latest. From 1858 he commissioned the photographer Leopold Haase (1831–1901) to carry out the work. By 1865 Berend's collection had reached over 1,000 illustrations. From 1861 he also held the position of senior physician in the surgical department at the Jewish Hospital in Auguststrasse .

He was married to Bertha Hirsch (1817–1897) since 1838. In 1841 his first son Emil (1841–1900) was born, in 1843 his son Albert (1843–1863). Heimann Wolff Berend died in 1873. His grave is still in the Jewish cemetery at Schönhauser Allee .
