The Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf emerged at the beginning of the 21st century from the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, which was founded in 1963. It is part of the Center for Psychosocial Medicine and housed in the so-called Fritz Schumacher House of the University Hospital.

history

The first professor for the history of medicine in Hamburg was Charles Lichtenthaeler , who taught from 1963 to 1983. Lichtenthaeler's main field of work was ancient Greek medicine . His successor, Ursula Weisser , continued this research direction and supplemented it with Arabic medicine . Weisser was appointed in 1987. From 1983 to 1987, Hermann Grensemann headed the institute as a substitute. From summer 2000 to spring 2003 the chair was vacant again. During this time, Kai Sammet was acting head of the institute . After Heinz-Peter Schmiedebach took up his post in 2003, the focus shifted to medicine from the 18th to the 20th century. The history of medicine was expanded to include another teaching and research area, medical ethics . In 2015, Philipp Osten took over the provisional management of the von Schmiedebach Institute, who had been seconded to the Charité as Professor of Medical Humanities . Osten has been the director of the institute and the Medical History Museum Hamburg since October 1, 2017.
