The Medical History Museum Hamburg , founded in October 2007, opened in June 2010. It is under the aegis of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . The museum offers a permanent exhibition, regular special exhibitions, conferences, lecture series, workshops and readings. It is located in the Fritz Schumacher House of the University Hospital (UKE) , Martinistraße 52, Building N 30.

Directors of the Medical History Museum Hamburg

The founding director of the museum is Heinz-Peter Schmiedebach . In 2017, Schmiedebach was followed by Philipp Osten as Director .

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition of the Medical History Museum Hamburg, The emergence of modern medicine , documents the history of medicine from the 19th to the 21st century.

Learning and memorial place "Medical crimes under National Socialism"

The study and memorial site “Medical Crimes under National Socialism” has been part of the permanent exhibition since November 2017 . This is reminiscent of Hamburg victims of Nazi euthanasia , forced sterilization and human experiments .

"Becoming a doctor" - history of medical teaching and training

Since June 2019, an exhibition room in the museum has been dedicated to the history of medical teaching and training.

Section room

The centerpiece of the Medical History Museum Hamburg is the restored section hall of the Pathological Institute from 1926. It contains eight stone section tables for examining the bodies of the deceased in a light-filled room.

The museum has various collections of scientific documents and objects.

Document collections

Documents on the history of the Eppendorfer Hospital and the historical photo collection of the same form the focus of the document collections of the museum and the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, which include holdings from various areas of medical history.

The museum has numerous collections of scientific objects.

Partial collections

The sub-collections include a moulage collection, collections from the ear, nose and throat clinic , from dental prosthetics, neuropathology and medical technology .

Moulage collection

The museum's moulage collection is outstanding . The collection includes 600 exhibits of different production times and origins . This also includes wax pictures of various stages of the disease and symptoms of syphilis . A selection of the moulages is shown.

research

The Medical History Museum Hamburg is a researching museum. In cooperation with the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine, it works on scientific topics and projects.
